Kayaking: One day exploring Lake Kivu scenic shores.
Paddling out onto Lake Kivu we find a picturesque coastline where traditional fishing boats ply the azure waters and lush, verdant hills reach up around us. Go fast or enjoy a gentle pace whilst enjoying the silence of the open water and watch for the many birds that dart in and out of bushes along the shoreline. We start from Paradis Malahide, exploring the coast, enjoying the beautiful water, scenery and interesting sights as far as a small uninhabited island where we often stop for lunch.
Alternatively, we find a shady spot under the trees on the mainland and maybe go for a walk to explore the countryside far from the tourism centers and towns. With local Rwandan guides this is a good but optional opportunity to meet local people and find out more about the challenges and rigours of their daily lives. We shall head with packed lunch for our day adventure.
Gisenyi Kayaking: Sunset kayaking trip
Meeting at 16:30 we spend about two hours exploring the coast near to the hotels, before heading back as dusk falls. We time our return so that – on the days that they are departing – we can witness the traditional fishing boats as they head off into the night, their crews singing rhythmically. One of the most spectacular events in Rwanda.
Note that fishing boats do not depart every day and whilst we do often get spectacular sunsets, we only cancel trips in the event of a thunderstorm. In the wet seasons thunderstorms disrupt the sunset on 5-10% of days, and at other times of year they can very rarely occur. If we cancel the trip due to a thunderstorm you will receive a full refund. If you’re booking a day or half-day trip you can set the date for this option on the afternoon before your trip.
