A Guide to Waterfalls in Rwanda
Rwanda is a country of hills and rivers, making it a hidden gem for waterfalls. The waterfalls are fed by rivers, streams, and geothermal springs, and each has ecological, historical, and cultural significance. Many are tucked near or within the country’s national parks, offering our clients not only the beauty of cascading waters but also encounters with wildlife, lush vegetation, and immersive hiking experiences, and exploring these natural wonders can easily be incorporated into your Rwanda safari with our guidance. Here are the most notable waterfalls in Rwanda, their history, surrounding parks, and the wildlife and flora you can expect to see.
Rurubu Falls
Rurubu Falls is located within Akagera National Park, formed by the Kagera River, which nurtures lush vegetation across the park’s savannah and woodland. This waterfall adds a serene charm to the park and attracts a variety of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, and numerous bird species. The falls create a natural oasis that draws animals to the area, offering our clients excellent opportunities for both photography and wildlife observation.
The waterfall sits amid acacia and grassland, making it a stunning contrast to the surrounding vegetation. During safaris through Akagera, particularly following the south gate exit, Rurubu Falls is a recommended stop for travelers to enjoy both its beauty and the nearby wildlife. Historically, many waterfalls in Rwanda, including Rurubu, are associated with local legends and traditional uses, adding a cultural layer to the visit.
Wildlife & Flora: Elephants, buffaloes, various antelopes, and birds; riverine vegetation and acacia woodlands.
Distance from Park Hub: Inside Akagera National Park, accessible via park trails.
Rusumo Waterfalls in Rwanda

Located approximately 40 km from Akagera National Park, Rusumo Falls sits on the Kagera River, forming a natural border between Rwanda and Tanzania. The falls are about 15 meters high and 40 meters wide, cascading over quartzophyllite and schist formations.
Rusumo is historically significant. In 1894, German explorer Gustav Adolf von Gotzen crossed this natural bridge from Tanzania into Rwanda, and later Belgian explorers followed the same route. Tragically, during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the falls became a refuge and a site of mass crossing, leaving a deep historical imprint. Despite this, today Rusumo Falls remains a dramatic natural spectacle.
Our clients often combine a visit to Rusumo with birding along the riverbanks and exploration of the surrounding countryside. The site is particularly spectacular during the rainy seasons from March to May and September to November when water flow is strongest.
Wildlife & Flora: Birds along the river, Nile crocodiles, hippos, and surrounding savannah species.
Distance from Akagera NP: 40 km.
Mashyuza Waterfall
Mashyuza Waterfall lies near Bugarama in western Rwanda. While modest in size, it is distinguished by the nearby geothermal hot springs and the presence of the Miniature Rwandan water lily (Nymphaea thermarum), endemic to Rwanda and rediscovered in the wild in 2023 after being propagated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The waterfall and hot springs provide a serene stopover for travelers seeking both nature immersion and a touch of Rwandan botanical history. Our clients enjoy combining this visit with short hikes around the lush surrounding hills.
Wildlife & Flora: Nymphaea thermarum, riverine plants, birds.
Distance from Park Hub: Closest to Bugarama town, western Rwanda.
Kamiranzovu Waterfall
Tucked within the Nyungwe Forest National Park, Kamiranzovu Waterfall is accessed through a forest trek where our clients encounter colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, and hundreds of bird species. The waterfall itself tumbles into a pool framed by ferns and orchids, offering a secluded spot to appreciate the forest’s vitality.
The trek to Kamiranzovu is manageable for most travelers, and hiring a guide enhances the experience with detailed insights into local flora, wildlife, and forest conservation efforts. Visiting the waterfall is as much about the journey through Nyungwe as it is about the waterfall itself.
Wildlife & Flora: Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, orchids, ferns, tropical birds.
Distance from Park Hub: Deep in Nyungwe Forest, accessible via trekking trails.
Rugezi Waterfall in Rwanda

Near Musanze and the Twin Lakes (Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo), Rugezi Waterfall is small but charming. Flowing down the hillsides of volcanic terrain, the falls offer a refreshing stop after exploring the lakes. Many of our clients pair the visit with a boat ride on Lake Burera or Lake Ruhondo, enjoying views of the waterfalls from the water and observing local fishermen at work.
This waterfall is ideal for travelers seeking gentle adventure and a quiet connection with nature. The surrounding vegetation includes fertile farmland, lush grasses, and riverine plants.
Wildlife & Flora: Freshwater birds, local flora along lake shores, lush hillside vegetation.
Distance from Park Hub: Musanze region, Twin Lakes area.
Rusizi River Waterfalls
Situated in Cyangugu in southwestern Rwanda, the Rusizi River waterfalls differ from other Rwandan falls due to their network of rapids flowing through hills and forests. The area is densely populated, and wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles can be observed.
A popular way for our clients to experience these falls is by boat trip, combining the waterfalls with wildlife observation and scenic views of the surrounding hills. The heavy water flow and dramatic landscape make it a thrilling stop for adventurous travelers.
Wildlife & Flora: Hippos, crocodiles, riverine birds, forest vegetation.
Distance from Park Hub: Cyangugu, near Lake Kivu shoreline.
