Detailed itinerary for 14 days Uganda Primate & Wildlife Tour
Day 1: Visit Akagera National Park. Travel time +2 hrs
Today early morning after having your breakfast, you will be picked by your safari driver guide at about 5 am from your lodge in Kigali and head for a day trip to Akagera national park, which is about 2.5 hours away from Kigali. Akagera National Park is majorly a Savannah Park with Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Waterbucks; Topi’s and recently introduced Lions. We shall take a game drive in search of these wildlife and numerous bird species. The game drive can last about 4 hours depending on the animal sightings and interest. Have lunch at Akagera game lodge or a picnic lunch in case you packed before your last game drive on your way out of the park arriving in Kigali later that evening at your booked accommodation.
Day 2: Kigali – Nyungwe Forest NP (Canopy Walk): Travel time +5 hrs
Early morning enjoys your breakfast and checkout of the hotel and drive heading to the western province, on your way visit Nyungwe National Park in Southern Province and later head for a canopy walk with an en route lunch. A Canopy Walk is one of an amazing adventure. This is the most incredible adventures you don’t want to miss. You will have the opportunity to see the monkeys move around in the treetops, the birds that are flying above you and below you and a beautiful view of the huge Nyungwe Forest and quite a number of butterflies. It’s also an amazing sight. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge. Meal Plan: Lunch & dinner.
Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Today, after an early morning breakfast, you will head to trek chimpanzee in the beautiful jungles of Nyungwe, where you will have a great chance to spot other primates such as the Angola colobus monkeys, red colobus monkeys, and number of bird species and later return back to the lodge for lunch. After lunch you will just decide to take a self-walk around or relax at your lodge. Meal Plan: Full board.
Day 4: Transfer to Kibuye at Lake Kivu. Travel time +4 hrs.
After having a relaxed breakfast, you will be transferred to Kibuye a lake shower town near Lake Kivu, where you will spend the entire day relaxing and may be taking a self-walk around the beach and town with lunch at one of the local restaurants. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge. Meal Plan: Full board.
Day 5: Boat trip & transfer to Musanze. Travel time +3 hrs
After an early morning relaxed breakfast, you will head for a boat ride in Lake Kivu to explore the islands, as you take a fresh sea breath and watch over a number of bird species such as the pied kingfishers, pelicans, and later drive to Musanze with an en route lunch at a local restaurant. Dinner and evening stay at the lodge. Meal Plan: Full board.
Day 6: Canoe ride
Upon having your relaxed early morning breakfast, you will head to Gisenyi for a canoe ride at the Mukungwa River, you get on your small canoe and figure out yourselves, though not many skills are need here, each one of you is able to do it, as you will have a guide to lead you. You will later return for lunch and relax the rest of the evening or take a walk around the village. Dinner and evening stay at the lodge. Meal Plan: Full board.
Day 7: Golden Monkey trekking
Today after you warm early morning breakfast, you will be picked by our safari driver guide who will transfer you to the park headquarters for briefing and start off you day golden monkey trekking. Just like the gorilla trekking experience, the same applies to golden monkey trekking though not so hectic like gorilla trekking. You will later return to the lodge for lunch and relax as you share the beautiful memory and stretch around to be fit for the next day hike.
Day 8: Hike to Mount Bisoke
The one-day trek lasts for seven hours plus the two that you spend while descending back to the starting point. The hikes start at 7:00 am with briefing from park official and then you will be assigned a guide. Mount Bisoke stands at 3711 meters above sea level, and it features a number of stunning floras and offers opportunity for visitors to catch a glimpse of the remarkable views of Virunga Volcanoes and the Crater Lake “Ngezi.” Lake Ngezi Trail gives you a taste of the Virunga Volcanoes Foothills, a Crater Lake, scenic views near and far, wildlife, birds, and monkeys. The hikes are less strenuous and even a person without experience can hike through it and as a result can be ideal for the less experienced mountaineers also. You will later return in the evening for dinner and overnight at the lodge. Meal plan: Full-Board.
Day 9: Cave visit and Cultural tour.
Today after taking your morning breakfast, you will head to visit some of the Musanze caves, the caves were used as a shelter during wartime for many centuries leading right up into the modern era, and as such, it’s an important site to local people. The cave exploration walk can last for roughly 3 hours. You will later return for lunch and later in the afternoon, ready for a village foot safari to explore the indigenous local life, with a taste of the traditional performance. Dinner and overnight at the lodge Meal plan: Full-Board.
Day 10: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi. Travel time +5 hrs
After your early morning breakfast, you will transfer to Uganda through Cyanika border to Lake Bunyonyi where you will spend your entire evening having a cool evening relaxation and overlooking the lake Bunyonyi after having your lunch at Bunyonyi Safari Resort. Meal Plan:
Day 11: Canoe ride and Transfer to Bwindi. Travel time +2hrs
After your morning breakfast, you head for another thrilling boat ride in this most spectacular lake, one of its kinds with numerous islands that make it most rewarding and center for tourism in the western region. After you will return relax and wait for lunch and later in the afternoon, transfer to Bwindi to the sector where your gorilla permit will be allocated. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. Meal Plan: Full Board.
Day 12: Gorilla Trekking Experience and transfer to Queen Elizabeth NP. Travel time +4 hrs.
After an early morning breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters together with your packed lunch early enough to be briefed about the code of conduct while with the gorillas or Golden Monkeys. This will be followed by entering the forest for trekking; the experience is magical and quite challenging, as you move from one trail to another throw the thickets in search for these primates. Quite a number of bird species and other primates plus wildlife can be spotted along the way. After trekking, you return to the lodge for lunch and transfer to Queen Elizabeth through the beautiful unwinding fig trees of Ishasha as you’re welcomed by a number of wildlife along the way. You will later check in at lodge for your dinner and overnight. Meal Plan: Full board.
Day 13: Game drive & Boat Cruise
After an early morning breakfast at 6:00 am, you will head in search for the morning hunters and grazers such as the buffalos, elephants, waterbucks, bushbucks, Uganda kobs, lions and variety of bird species that you will encounter on your game ride and later return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch you will proceed for a boat cruise along the Kazinga channel to view the water dwelling birds and animals such as the pied kingfisher, African fish eagle, herons, darters to mention but a few and see animals such as buffalos, crocodiles, monitor lizards, elephants wallowing at the mad and much more. After boat cruise, you will proceed for a short game drive as you find you way back to lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 14: Return to Kigali. Travel time + 6 hrs.
Today after having a relaxed morning breakfast, with a beautiful view of the channel, you checkout of the lodge and drive back to Kigali via Kitagata hot springs to view the beautiful hot springs’ back to Kigali with an en route lunch at a convenient restaurant along the way as you wrap up your 14-days Uganda Primate & Wildlife tour with us.
