After breakfast, we set out to explore the beautiful capital city, a bustling town with a population of some 200,000 inhabitants. Bujumbura is the capital and main port of Burundi and ships most of the country’s chief export, coffee as well as cotton, skins, and tin ore. This area was colonized by Germany at the end of the 19th century, and there is still architecture dating from that period, including the Postmaster’s House. It is the largest urban center in this country and has industries like textiles, leather, paper, chemicals and agricultural products,
Other attractions we will explore include the national stadium, mosque, three museums (including the museé vivant (Living Museum), a reconstructed open-air village displaying Burundian culture), and the Islamic Cultural Centre. There is also an excellent market.
Day 3-4: Transfer to Rusizi National Park
Parc national de la Rusizi, as it is popularly known, is situated 15 km north of the city of Bujumbura. This 30,000-acre park is divided into two parts; the larger part lies on the eastern bank of the Rusizi River (called the palm forest) whereas the smaller part forms the delta of Rusizi at the entry point of Lake Tanganyika (called the delta). The river Delta extends over 500 ha of vegetation made of Phragmites Mauritianus. It is a natural shelter for a few families of hippos and antelopes that come here in search of grazing land.
At the end of the track, if you are lucky enough, you may encounter a few crocodiles fast asleep on the golden sand of the riverbanks. Rusizi national park is composed of forest (50%), artificial landscapes (23%), shrub land (18%), and grassland 7%). This makes this national reserve a home of numerous wildlife species hence a wonderful Burundi tourist destination.
Rusizi national park hosts Wildlife species which include hippopotamus, antelopes, a few crocodiles and monkeys, along with numerous species of colorful birds. There are over a thousand different plant and tree species like the Acacia albida and the Euphorbia candelabrum to be found in the northern part of the reserve. Right in the deepest part of the reserve you will be able to marvel at the natural ponds of different sizes left by the Rusizi meanders.
Day 5-6: Transfer to Kibira national park Stay at Park Lodge
Situated at the top of the apex Zaire-Nile, with its 40,000 ha of preserved forest land, is the largest completely untouched natural area in Burundi. Kibira national park and Mt. Teza are located at an altitude of 4500-7000 ft. Mt. Teza is a superb range of mountains on the Zaire- Nile ridge. It was formerly a sacred hunting ground of the Kings of Burundi but it’s now home to over 100 mammal species, 200 bird species, 644 species of plants and flowers, and many primates.
Its wildlife constitutes a real shelter for chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys like cercophitecus and black colobus, and crested mangabeys scattering away upon the approach of human beings and defying all laws of equilibrium and gravity.
The park is crisscrossed by a network of 180 km of tracks and paths mainly used by guard car patrols and motorized tourists. On guided nature walk deep into the Kibira forest, you will be able to discover the fascinating attraction of the primeval forest and the charming songs of birds. The mountain chain surrounding the park hides the awesome view of the thermal springs, and access to the park is made through the tea plantations of Teza and Rwegura which count among the best natural sceneries.
Day 7-8: Transfer to Rwihinda Lake Natural Reserve
Stay at Park Lodge. After breakfast, we transfer to Rwihinda Lake Natural Reserve. Located in the north of Burundi, immediately north of the town of Kirundo close to the Rwandan border, Lake Rwihinda, known in the past as Lac aux Oiseaux (Bird Lake), lies a little upstream of the Akanyaru Wetlands.
The area of the Lake is 425ha, but the total protected area has been extended to cover 8,000ha. Lake Rwihinda Natural Reserve is a real sanctuary for migratory aquatic birds which come to the site by the thousands to reproduce. All these now protected birds can nest more and more on the green swamps and islets of the lake. Crested Cranes and Herons are some of the birds that live there. The visitor can drift along on barges and manage to approach many birds without frightening them off.
